Starting from 2006 (and up to 2019) the Long Distance/Open Water are held together with the swimming pool ones. This has as a consequence the separation of senior/junior open water competitions, since the latter are held together with their respective swimming-pool championships.
In 2007 were organised the CMAS Games regrouping all the competition disciplines of the confederation. This had as a consequence the modification of the alternation between world and continental championships, which are held on odd and even years respectively. For the junior championships the periodicity changed one year earlier since two consecutive world championships were organised in 2005 and 2006.
