Establishing the proper order and numbering of the Panamerican Championships is a real challenge. I am giving below the timeline of the championships but I am aware that there might be omissions and/or mislabelling of competitions
The first Panamerican Championship was held in Bogotá in 1993. The second took place in Mexico (DF and not Acapulco as initially planned) in 1996. In 1997 took place in San Andrés le first Open Water panamerican Championship. The 2001, Cali, competition was cancelled and the next panamerican organisation was held in 2006. Curiously the memory of the competitions in the 90s had disappeared and so in 2006 was organised the first CMAS Panamerican Cup. Then in 2008, in Mexico DF and Acapulco was organised the 2nd CMAS Panamerican Cup together with an Open Water competition which, by rights, is the 2nd Panamerican OW championship.
By the coincidence of two Championships in the 90s and two Cups in the 00s, we arrive in 2010 at the 3rd Panamerican Championship. I decided to keep this numbering because otherwise, nobody would be able to understand what was happening.
The complication comes from the fact that in 2010 and 2012 (La Havana and Cali) there were also junior categories in the competition. They must be understood and 1st and 2nd junior Panamerican. In 2014 (5th Panamerican) there were no juniors, but then in 2015, there was a specific junior Panamerican in Medellín. For me, this is the 3rd.
Then we had the 6th and 7th Panamerican in 2017 and 2019 (Palmira and Santa Marta) and there were Open Water competitions in both (which should be the 3rd and 4th Panamerican).
The 8th Panamerican was held in 2023 in Barranquilla, Colombia.
