Long Distance/Open Water championships 1987-2001

While Open Water competitions were organised form the very beginning of finswimming as a competitive sport (and, in fact, even preceding the swimming-pool competitions) the first official European championships were not organised before 1987. The next year the first World Championships were held in Paris.

The championships formula and the distances did vary over the years. The first European championship was followed by a series of World ones and only in 1996 did the European championships come back, alternating wit the World ones over even and odd years.

From 1994 the championships were organised simultaneously for senior and junior athletes, naturally with separate classifications.
